2011 Nike US Open of Surfing Photos
Photos from the 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing event in Huntington Beach. This was the last time Kelly Slater won the US Open of Surfing. This was also the first year we started to cover the surfing competition in Huntington Beach.
These are just a few of the hundreds of photos we captured in the week-long event. Summer is always crowded in Huntington Beach, but more so during the event. You can see the thousands of people packed in during the final day when Kelly Slater won the men’s event.
Before this event, I had been a photographer for over 16 yrs, but this was my first official surfing event to cover. It was challenging, a big learning curve, but well worth it. This event launched me into shooting the event for the next several years. The 2011 Nike US Open of Surfing was where I perfected the art of taking these types of photos.
