2015 Nike US Open of Surfing Through High Resolution Photos
We had the privilege of attending the 2015 Nike US Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, California. With our cameras, long lenses, and lots of sunblock, we set out to capture it in high resolution detail. The result was a large batch of high-resolution photos that you can view below.
Within our collection lie popular pro surfers such as Caroline Marks, Luke Davis, and Zoe McDougall. Photographing this event takes lots of patience and understanding of the sequence the surfing schedule and of course rules. We spend a lot of time running/walking fast from one end of the beach to the other to capture them going out and coming back in. Then running up to the pier to shoot them during their heat. Yup, that’s a lot of physical stamina.
But the 2015 Nike US Open of Surfing was not merely about the competition. In many ways, this week-long event is a celebration of surf culture and the spirit of outdoor sports. Our photos offer a glimpse into the vibrant festival village, where fans participate in many activities. From live music performances to interactive exhibits, the festival village was as important as the surfing event held on the beach side!
Among the many highlights captured in the photos are the iconic mounted police. These units came from Huntington Beach, Anaheim, and Santa Ana. As they patrolled the sandy walkways, these horses added a sense of security and grandeur to the event. I made sure to position myself in different areas as they marched on. Photographing horses is always fun, but at a surfing competition its a real treat!
